Friday, November 17th 2017, a dream came true: I finally got to see my most favourite Canadian band from Toronto, called Austra. Austra is the project of singer Katie Stelmanis, founded in 2009. She is also producing most of their music herself. Austra has been heavily influencing me over the past years, their hybrid-drumming style has been immensely pushing forward the Synth-pop music scene with their combination of industrial and sampled sounds. And I was lucky enough to be in the first row, yeehaw!
What synth gear are they using?
Appearing to what I saw on stage, Austra uses the following Synthesizers on stage:
- Clavia Nord Lead 4
- Roland Jupiter 80
- Moog SUB 37
- Some kind of USB-Midi-Keyboard
How do they control their show?
Austra uses Ableton Live as their main Digital Audio Workstation, combined with a hardware-tool called Ableton Push.
Did you ask the band something?
Yes. After the show, Katie sold band merchandise and I asked her about the first sound on their song „Freepower“ on the album „Future Politics“. To me, it sounds like a recording of a stomach, but Katie told me, it’s a sample from one of NASA’s released space recordings.
